Rome (2015)

Summertime 2015 and we have returned to one of my favourite cities – Rome. It has been over three years since I was last here, but the memories come flooding back as I walk down the cobble stoned street from our apartment in Trastevere. The same neighbourhood we stayed in last time, I love the vibe of Trastevre with it’s narrow winding streets, and plethora of cafes and bars. In the summer there are bars and restaurants set up along the river around Trastevere, a great spot to while away the evening and watch the sun set.     On our first night we make a beeline for our...

Florence

Florence is a city full of stories, as you wander the narrow streets you can’t help but think about what the streets have seen. Our apartment in Florence was in a beautiful old building with extravagant high ceilings, lofty timber windows and an elegant chandelier, so we nicknamed it “the Manor”. We climbed over 400 steps to the top of the Duomo to take in the spectacular views over the city. Stop by the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David.  Despite the familiarity of the statue having seen the image many times, the sheer size was astonishing, he really is larger than...

Rome (2012)

We arrive into Rome by train and are pretty tired so decide that rather than brave the metro / trams it would be easiest with our baggage to just get a taxi. Out the front of the taxi stand a middle aged man in a long trench coat asks “Taxi?! Taxi?!”  Wayne obliges and tells him where we want to go, he immediately whisked us off down the street – heading away from the taxi rank.  Wayne and I exchange brief glances, it feels a little off. It began to feel more wrong as he led us down a random street to a non marked vehicle that was most definitely not a registered taxi.  I hesitantly left my...

Under a Roman Sun

Guest post by Wayne The night we arrived in Rome, we headed straight to a basic, traditional Roman restaurant which reportedly made the best spaghetti carbonara in Roma – the city in which the dish was supposedly invented.  Antica Trattoria da Carlone is on our side of the river, in the heart of Trastevere. We chose an apartment in this area as it has a reputation for being the most authentic suburb in Roma, and while it has gentrified somewhat from the humble, working class suburb it once was, it still has a tangible charm about it.  The narrow, twisting medieval streets never lead where...

Venice

Venice is a place I had always wanted to visit, there’s something so mysterious about a city built on water. We arrived on NYE 2011, and walking out of the train station were immediately greeted with a bright blue sky and sparkling canal. We took the scenic vaporetto to Piazza San Marco, the main square and also close to where we stayed. Venice is a very crowded and touristy place, although we had to remind ourselves not to judge too harshly as we forget that we’re tourists too! We stayed in a beautiful apartment which although located only a few steps back from the hustle and...
