After an hour flight from Manila we land on Busuanga Island, located in the north of the province of Palawan. As we flew in over the tropical lush green mountains I was itching to get my feet on the ground. We were attracted to Coron, a quiet town famous for nearby sunken WWII Japanese ship wrecks. We checked into Balaibinda, a small and basic hotel with a nice breezy rooftop where we enjoyed our coffee each morning. After eight hours on a banca boat from Coron we arrived at El Nido, a place others had described to me as paradise. As our boat slowly pulled in we were greeted by stunning sheer limestone cliffs to one side and a beautiful sandy beach on the other. We hadn’t even stepped off the boat and it was already apparent why El Nido has been gaining in popularity with travellers over the last few years. Port Barton, Palawan

We take a mini-van from El Nido and finally, at the end of a long and bumpy dirt road arrive at the sleepy little town of Port Barton in San Vincente. Here there are no ATMs or banks, no taxis or trikes, and electricity is only available from 6pm until midnight. This means during the day there’s no wifi, which turned out to be a total blessing and an opportunity to switch off and unwind. Instead of being on our phones we read books cover to cover, had real conversations, played games of chess and laid in hammocks that swung gently in the breeze. Time passed by in a pleasant haze....
